A Balanced Diet
“40:30:30 for optimal health”
Macronutrients consist of proteins, fats and carbohydrates. Our health is strongly influenced by the balance of these three nutrients. Many trend diets focus on the exclusion of one of the three, creating an imbalance. There is much evidence that an imbalance in the diet may cause undesirable effects on health such as weight gain, heart disease, depression, poor immunity, digestive issues and much more. In order to maintain good health, many well recognized nutrition specialists recommend that most individuals follow a 40/30/30 eating plan where 40% of caloric intake comes from carbohydrates, 30% from protein and 30% from fat. Portion control is another important factor since overeating can hinder the proper digestion and assimilation of food. Protein portions should be no larger than the palm of your hand, half an inch thick. Carbohydrate portions can be approximately a fist. And good fat sources about 2 tablespoons (for oils) or a handful that you can close your fingers around (for nuts). For more information on the macronutrients, click on the following links:
